Drivers BEWARE: Major Road Construction Begins on Garrett Road — Detours in Place Through June!

Heads up, El Paso commuters — starting today, a major construction project is underway on Garrett Road, and it’s expected to last until mid-June. The El Paso County Road and Bridge Department has officially launched a low-water crossing reconstruction project that will affect traffic in and around several residential and commercial areas. The work zone is located near the north end of Garrett Road, and officials say the construction is critical to preventing dangerous flooding during the upcoming summer monsoon season. The new low-water crossing will replace outdated infrastructure that has repeatedly failed during heavy rains in recent years. “This is about safety first,” said Public Works Engineer Kevin Soto. “We’ve had too many close calls with water rescues and vehicle damage due to outdated crossings. This fix is long overdue.” Project Timeline: Start Date: April 16, 2025 Estimated Completion: June 13, 2025 Daily Work Hours: 7:00 AM – 6:00 PM Area Affected: Garrett Road near Horizon Boulevard What Drivers Should Expect: Road closures in both directions No thru-traffic allowed Residential access only for local homes Heavy equipment and workers present throughout the day County officials have set up multiple clearly marked detour routes, but drivers are advised to allow extra time for their commute. Local school districts have already adjusted bus routes, and emergency responders have been notified to reroute accordingly. The Garrett Road project is part of a larger $22 million infrastructure improvement initiative targeting rural flood-prone roads throughout El Paso County. “We’re asking for patience now to prevent bigger problems later,” added Soto. “When the next flood hits, we want to be ready.” Residents in the area have mixed reactions — some are frustrated by the expected delays, while others are relieved that long-standing drainage issues are finally being addressed. Stay with El Paso Bulletin for updated construction maps, aerial progress images, and public feedback as the project unfolds.
